Fred "Cooper" Stockman Obituary

Fred M Stockman, "Cooper", 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024.  Born in Hammond, IN to Bernice and Fred Stockman. Growing up in Calumet City, Cooper graduated from Thornton Fractional North High School in 1958 and married Gail Torrez at St. Victor Catholic Church.  He remained devoted to his faith throughout his life and attended St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Fred and Gail had four daughters - Linda (Greg) Smith, Susan Stockman, Paula (Mike) Miller, Carolyn (David) Nelson; five grandchildren Amanda, Samantha, Monica, Henry and Rachel; also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Sarah (Donald) Cooper, Jerry (Josephine), Connie Mortier, Sheila (Chuck) O’Connell, Thomas (Dawn), and Carl Stockman and many nieces and nephews. Cooper was preceded in death by his brother Ronald (Barbara); his sister, Patricia and brothers in law Nick Mortier and Jack Harris. He loved his family dearly and was a dedicated father and grandfather.

Cooper worked at Inland Steel for 34 years in the blast furnace and No. 11 Battery.  His artwork and love of music were two constants in his life.  He was an extremely talented painter and artist. He painted many homes and cars, including custom work such as hand lettering, illustrations, and pin striping on vehicles, signs, and clothing.  Much time was spent at US 30 Drag Strip, Memorial Park, Wells Street Beach, and having gatherings for his family and friends.  He had a close group of lifetime friends included in a club called The Aventuras.  He also had a great love of music, particularly Jimmy Reed, B.B. King, and George Jones.  He walked many miles with his beloved Siberian Husky named Sarge.
