Joseph Burke
94, of Crown Point, IN, passed away Monday, September 9, 2024. He is survived by his children, Debbie (Fred) Hamilton, Lori Hall, Linda Devine, Kerry (Sue), Jeff, Joe, Russell (Christine); 27 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; sons, Dan and Mark; siblings, Harriet, Cliff, Lawrence, Louie, George, Barbara.
Born prematurely during the height of the Great Depression, Joseph wasn’t initially expected to survive, but he did thanks to the love and care he received from his family. He made the most of the time granted to him on this earth, and shared that time with the love of his life, Geraldine, for over 73 years following their marriage in 1951.
Joseph worked in many fields throughout his life, from a stint working in engineering, to handyman work, and sales, but it was his dedication to make small improvements and fixes to everyday problems that really shine a light on the way he approached the world. For Joseph, no problem or inconvenience existed which couldn’t be made a little better with some tinkering. A modified wrench, a power tool, or a creative solution to hanging window treatments in a corner were all hallmarks of this, one of his most endearing qualities.
Equal parts sentimental and analytical, Joseph loved to play chess with his children and grandchildren and to shoot pool whenever there was another willing player, while being equally comfortable discussing religion, philosophy, and ancient history. As a father and grandfather, Joseph was never quick to condemn and always open to hearing all sides, a peacemaker at heart. Sundays after church he could reliably be found making blueberry waffles and sharing them with whoever dropped by.
Despite living for 94 years, we his family cannot help but still feel that he is gone too soon.
Per Joseph’s wishes there will be no public visitation. Funeral Mass, Wednesday, September 25, 2025 at 11AM, Holy Name Catholic Church, 11000 W. 133rd Ave, Cedar Lake, IN 46303. Burial following mass in Holy Name Cemetery. www.sheetsfuneral.com
