Linda Hug

Linda Hug, a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, passed away Saturday morning, March 16, 2019 at her Crown Point apartment.

Linda graduated from Lowell High School and has remained close friends with many of her classmates, getting together with them over the years for monthly dinners. Linda recently celebrated her 55th reunion with the class of ’62 in 2017. Linda earned her secretarial certificate from the Hammond Business College in 1962, and graduated from Indiana College of Commerce, May 1980 as an executive secretary. Linda had a successful career as an executive and then legal secretary for various companies and law firms in Northwest Indiana. 

After Linda‘s daughter Heather was diagnosed with leukemia in 1986, Linda became involved with Candle Lighters, a National Organization offering support for families of children with cancer. Linda was a co-president for the Northwest Indiana chapter for several years. At this time Linda decided to go to school to become a professional clown, and earned her certificate in the art of clowning from Purdue University-Calumet in 1991. Linda enjoyed her persona as “Hug-a-Bug” the clown, bringing laughter and joy to children with cancer, as well as making appearances at birthday parties for friends and family.

Linda enjoyed cooking, sewing, and painting as well as singing in her church choir. She baked and cooked for Church and family events. Linda painted along with Bill Alexander and others on Channel 11, took night classes at Lowell High School, and enrolled in a special painting class in Michigan to learn the art of Norwegian rosemaling. Linda’s creative influence figured greatly in her daughter’s decision to become a professional artist.

Linda is survived by her daughter Heather (John Meyer) Hug; her sister Laura (Jim) Claus; her brother, Glenn Thomason; Heather’s father, George Hug; and many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A visitation will be held Friday, March 22nd, 2019 from 4 to 8PM at Sheets Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 604 East Commercial Avenue, Lowell, Indiana. A Memorial Service will be held on May 25th, 2019 at 10AM at Saint John’s United Church of Christ, 1288 South Indiana Avenue, Crown Point, Indiana.
