Robert "John" Sutphen Obituary

Robert “John” Sutphen

94, of Lowell, IN passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024. He was born in the Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago on May 29, 1929 to his parents, Alice (nee` Fisher) and Harry “Don” Sutphen. John experienced childhood during The Great Depression, living in Avalon Park on Chicago’s southside. While attending primary and high school, John was active in all school sports, and also became proficient on the trumpet in band. Following graduation from the all-boys Tilden Technical High School in 1947, John enlisted in the Air Force from 1948-1952. He served as a crew chief on a C-54 cargo plane while stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War. After discharge, he returned to Chicago and attended college at the University of Illinois campus at Navy Pier, majoring in engineering followed by a year studying aeronautical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Starting in the 6thgrade, John had various jobs; working as a newsstand operator, unloading freight cars, driving a taxi and even selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door before settling on a lifelong career. John’s first position in the engineering field was a trainee with the Chicago Park District as a surveyor. This led to the engineering career that he loved. While he loved his work John embraced retirement and the time it allowed him and his wife, Sue, to travel many roads throughout the U.S.A. and beyond. Also spending time with his many grandchildren was always a priority. Having touched many lives, John will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene “Sue”; children, Kathleen (Jay) Griffin, Robert “Bob”, James “Jim”, Jeff Cale and Angela Cale; grandchildren, Tyler, Rachel (fiancé` Kyle Duelge) and Jacob Sutphen, Carolyn (Nick) DeFalco, Anna (Adam) Gorecki, Megan (Jason) Boone, Julia Sutphen, Derick, Dustin (Ashley), Payton and Lindsay (finace` Alexandria Wise) Cale; 4 great grandchildren; special friends, Jody and Carla, Zach (Kelsey) and Nate Herr.  He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Harry Sutphen and Barbara Swett; brother-in-law, Roland Swett; beloved daughter-in-law, Susanne Sutphen; and so many great friends.
