Tom Grant Obituary

Thomas Edward Grant passed away on January 21, 2021. He was 79 years old.

A descendent of the town founders, Tom was raised in Lowell, Indiana, where he met his beloved wife, Charlene. He graduated from Indiana University in 1963 with a degree in Business Administration, and moved his young family to Louisville to begin his career.  A position in the Information Technology industry (when it was still called ‘Computers’) took him back to Lowell, where he spent the remainder of his career as an executive with Whiteco Industries.

He was involved in his community as a member of the school board, and was a lifelong, active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lowell.

As he approached retirement, Tom found a calling with Habitat for Humanity. For many years, he made an annual trip to places like Mississippi, Texas and Mexico to build homes, both as a ‘worker bee’ and a trip leader. He cherished the relationships built during those years.

Throughout his life, his family was always his center. He played so many roles over the years – baseball coach, chauffeur, grill master, scout leader, driving instructor, patient listener and sharer of life’s most important lessons. He spent years attending countless swim meets, softball games and tennis matches with his kids; then, when his grandkids took up soccer and baseball, trumpet and track, he continued his role as #1 fan and traveled to as many of those events as he could. But no matter where life took him, he was a protector, teacher, trusted advisor and the most reliable person anyone knew.

He never knew a stranger and was truly interested in getting to know people. Declining health limited his adventures, and he spent his final years under the watchful, loving care of his family. At the very end, he was at peace and looking forward to being with his Lord and Savior. He will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know him.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Charlene; children Tom (Karen) Grant, Karen Grant, Krista Grant, Lynn (Bill) Skafish; grandchildren Ashley, Tommy (Arielle) and Colin Grant, and Rebecca and Joshua Koon. Additionally, he leaves brothers Mick (Emogene) and Jim (Deb) Grant, and sister Roberta (Bob) White, and their families.
